5 Reasons Using a Water Softener Helps Save Energy

You may not have considered a water softener to be an energy saver before now, but because it can keep appliances, showerheads and faucets unclogged, a water softener proves to be a great energy saver in many Calgary homes. After all, our city has some of the hardest water in Western Canada. Here are five ways water softeners provide energy savings.

Electric Water Heaters

Over time, as much as 30 pounds of calcium carbonate can build up on the walls of an electric water heater storing hard water. This buildup causes the heating element to be overworked, which increases operating costs and shortens its lifespan. With soft water, buildup isn’t an issue so the unit lasts longer and runs more efficiently.

Gas Water Heaters

Thanks to the addition of a water softener, a gas water heater can continue operating at its original efficiency rating for 15 years. During the same period of time, a gas water heater storing hard water may experience up to a 48% decrease in efficiency.

Gas Tankless Water Heaters

Like gas storage water heaters, tankless units can sustain their original efficiency level for over 15 years when soft water runs through them. Operating costs also decrease between 34% and 47% as compared to hard water. When attempting to heat hard water, on the other hand, a tankless water heater could fail in less than two years because calcium carbonate buildup blocks downstream plumbing.

Showerheads and Faucets

The performance of several-year-old showerheads with soft water flowing through them is just as good as the day they were installed, whereas hard water decreases water flow by 75% after less than 18 months. Faucets also collect scaling on the strainers very quickly when hard water runs through them. In fact, they can become complexly clog in less than three weeks!

Deposits and scaling inside appliances like dishwashers and washing machines may not lead to decreased function, but the need for de-liming and cleanup because of calcium carbonate buildup is apparent in units with hard water and completely absent in those with soft water.
